Harris County deputies are investigating after a body was found early on Friday in a waterway near the 18200 block of the North Freeway. Crime Scene Investigation and homicide detectives responded, and officials are treating the case as an active investigation. The victim’s identity, cause of death, and how they ended up in the water have not been released.
What deputies say
According to a post from the Harris County Sheriff's Office on their X account, deputies were dispatched to the 18200 block of the North Freeway and, when they arrived, found a deceased person in a nearby waterway. The agency said Crime Scene Investigation and Homicide detectives were responding and noted that the circumstances at the scene were still unknown.
Autopsy, identification and next steps
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences explains that the medical examiner’s office is responsible for confirming identity, conducting autopsies and performing toxicology testing to determine the cause and manner of death. That work can take anywhere from several days to a few weeks, depending on lab workloads. Once a person is identified, the institute and investigators typically notify the next of kin and then release information to the public through the investigating agency.
Why waterway recoveries can take time
Deaths involving bayous and other waterways often come with few obvious external injuries, which can make classification tricky without more extensive lab work.
