Following a tragic car crash in December that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old boy, the boy's mother, Elizabeth Sanchez, 49, has been arrested on charges including vehicular homicide by intoxication after being released from the hospital. The Metro Nashville Police Department reported that the crash occurred on the afternoon of December 16, with Sanchez's vehicle, a GMC Yukon, traveling off the road and into a drainage ditch with no signs of braking prior to the accident. As per WSMV, Sanchez has been hospitalized since the crash and was taken into custody upon her discharge from medical care.
The incident unfolded along Old Hickory Boulevard in Nashville's Cane Ridge area. Investigative reports suggest that Sanchez failed to navigate a curve in the road which led to the vehicle's catastrophic journey through a fence and across a field. Born by first responders, there was the scent of alcohol on Sanchez, and she allegedly admitted to medical staff that she had consumed beer on the day of the crash. According to FOX 17, Sanchez was slated for arrest on outstanding warrants after her hospital stay.
The son, who was seated in the Yukon's backseat during the incident, was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where he was pronounced dead. WKRN reports that the emotional weight of this loss is compounded by the circumstances surrounding the crash, with implications that Sanchez's alleged intoxication was a contributing factor to the fatality and subsequent criminal charges.
Sanchez currently remains in custody, and upon her release from the hospital, officials delivered the news that her charges are significant. She faced the label of "Most Wanted" by the MNPD Criminal Warrants Division briefly before her arrest. In a turn of events, the division had included Sanchez on its "Most Wanted" list a day before acknowledging that she had been in hospital care since the accident. Despite the evident chaos of recovery and accusation, deemed ineligible for release due to mental health reasons, Sanchez now awaits the next steps in the legal system's process.
