
The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Freeze Warning and an Extreme Cold Watch for the city of New Orleans and surrounding parishes due to expected cold temperatures and low wind chills.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures were forecast to drop to around 30°F, prompting a Freeze Warning that remained in effect until 8 a.m. CST. A sub-freezing temperatures and wind chills as low as 14°F are possible from late Friday night through Sunday morning. The affected areas include Central Plaquemines, Coastal Jefferson Parish, Lower Terrebonne, and parts of Western Orleans Parish.
Freeze conditions may damage crops, sensitive vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are advised to take precautions such as wrapping exposed pipes, draining outdoor faucets, or allowing water to drip slowly to reduce the risk of freezing.
The advisory also highlights increased risk for individuals without adequate shelter. Residents are encouraged to wear appropriate cold-weather clothing, including hats, gloves, and face coverings, when outdoors.
