Honolulu’s New Year began with two separate moped accidents that hospitalized two men, one initially in critical condition. The first accident occurred near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport yesterday morning, when a 61-year-old rider was thrown from his moped while trying to avoid a pedestrian, KITV reported. Traveling westbound on Kamehameha Highway, he lost control while turning left onto Paiea Street. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to serious condition.
The accident occurred when the moped rider attempted to avoid a woman crossing Paiea Street near N. Nimitz Highway against the "Do Not Walk" signal, as per KITV. The rider lost control and was thrown onto the road, sustaining critical injuries. The Honolulu Police Department stated that speed is not believed to have played a role, but whether drugs or alcohol were involved is still under investigation.
According to KHON2, another moped accident occurred the previous evening, involving an 18-year-old rider who struck a parked car shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Anoni Street. The rider was treated by first responders and transported to the hospital in serious condition.
Investigators noted that the 61-year-old rider was not wearing a helmet during the crash. The severity of his injuries highlights the importance of proper safety equipment.
