New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin announced the creation of a Quadrennial Advisory Commission to review and make recommendations on compensation for certain city officials, in accordance with the New York City Charter.
As per the New York City website, the City Charter requires the formation of this commission every four years to evaluate salaries for City Council members, citywide elected officials, and District Attorneys. The commission’s recommendations must be considered by the Mayor and the Speaker and approved by the City Council before taking effect. The city had not convened such a commission since 2015.
The commission will serve as an alternative to proposed legislation that would have automatically increased salaries without a formal review process. Instead, the independent body will conduct public meetings and issue a final report within the timeframe outlined in the Charter.
Under the Charter, the commission must be established during the third year of each mayoral term. Additional information regarding the commission’s work and recommendations is expected to be released as the review process moves forward.
