The City of North Las Vegas is set to celebrate Black History Month with a slate of events aimed to engage the community in recognizing the rich cultural tapestry and historical contributions of African Americans. As per the information put forth by the city on their official website, the local government is teaming up with the North Las Vegas Library District and Department of Parks and Recreation to offer a calendar packed with activities for all ages.
Kicking things off, the city will host a Community Celebration on February 21 at Aliante Nature Discovery Park. The event, free to the public, promises to fill the afternoon with live music, cultural displays, and a variety of food options. In a move to practically support the community, the city is also organizing a Black Hair Care Product drive to aid North Las Vegas students. This initiative seeks to positively influence young people's self-image and confidence by providing them with the means to maintain their hair properly.
Throughout the month, residents can look forward to a series of family-friendly programs commencing with the Black History Lunch Celebration on February 7 at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center. A nominal fee of $5 gains attendees access to a brunch filled not just with food but also with community spirit. This is followed by another culinary event, the Black History Brunch Celebration, on February 21 at the Neighborhood Recreation Center. Here, attendees are encouraged to "come hungry, leave inspired" and to take part in a communal experience that feeds both the body and heart, as reported by the city's website.
The City Council is set to formally recognize Black History Month during its February 4 meeting with the presentation of a proclamation.
