Three NYPD detectives were reportedly denied proper access and misidentified as ICE agents at NYU Langone/Cobble Hill Hospital. According to The New York Post, the incident occurred last Friday night when the officers, in plainclothes, sought medical care following an encounter with a suspect. Upon arriving at the hospital’s emergency room, they were informed they could not bring their service weapons inside. As a result, one detective received treatment while another waited in the waiting area with their weapon.
At that time, hospital personnel reportedly approached the detective who was waiting and told him to leave because he was armed. Hospital staff then mistakenly believed the detectives were ICE agents, and as tensions increased, they were advised to obtain care elsewhere. Sources familiar with the event told ABC7NY that the detectives had properly identified themselves but were still treated with disregard.
The NYPD Detectives Endowment Association issued a statement criticizing the hospital's actions, saying that no individual, including NYPD detectives injured in the line of duty, should be subjected to such treatment. The union also announced an investigation into the incident to ensure members are treated appropriately. Former Mayor Eric Adams commented on the hospital's conduct, describing it as a total moral collapse and urging Governor Kathy Hochul to hold the healthcare facility accountable for politicizing emergency care.
In response to the backlash, NYU Langone issued a formal apology, acknowledging regret over how the situation was handled and reaffirming its commitment to provide high-quality care to NYPD officers and all law enforcement personnel. In 2025, the hospital reported treating nearly 1,000 NYPD officers. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of the officers and is working with NYU Langone to address the incident, according to an NYPD spokesperson. The department has emphasized the importance of respect and attentive medical care for its members.
