At The Ohio State University, undergraduates recently had a chance to shine, demonstrating leadership and business acumen gained from internships during an exposition event. According to a report by Ohio State News, the Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) Expo at the Ohio Union brought together students to present in various categories, from Creative & Artistic Endeavors to Leadership and Internships.
The experience was especially enlightening for Anthony Fox, a computer science and engineering major who learned about the intersections of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity during his time with Kudu Dynamics/Leidos. He was involved in a research team that sought to create a cyber-reasoning system that could autonomously detect and patch vulnerabilities in code. In a statement obtained by Ohio State News, Fox explained his project's goal to "fixes them automatically". He also picked up new study tools from his exposure "to help you study on your specific notes."
Similarly, Sean Broderick, another computer science student, expanded his expertise in data analysis through his internship with Union Home Mortgage. Broderick dealt with complex machine learning models to assess risk in mortgage applications. "We also worked with BLMs, which are object detection models for analyzing financial documents and doing analysis on them," Broderick told Ohio State News, reflecting on how the internship enabled him to understand the financial world more holistically.
For operations management major Misa Huls, the program was an opportunity to dive deeply into the real estate sector. After earning her real estate license through Hondros College and Colibri Real Estate and completing 120 hours of diverse training, she took her learning outside the classroom. "I was able to go on showings with them, which was just really transformational," Huls shared with Ohio State News. Her goal is to leverage the acquired knowledge in her future business endeavors and investments.
Carine Adorh, mixing her marketing major with a minor in fashion and retail studies, sought to enhance language skills and cultural understanding through the Global May Korea program. During her time in South Korea, where she studied at Kyung Hee University, Adorh pursued her aspiration to become fluent in Korean. Reflecting on her experience, Adorh said, "It was a personal thing, wanting to learn more about their culture because I do want to work there sometime in the future," during a conversation with Ohio State News.
The STEP Expo highlights numerous paths taken by Ohio State students to cultivate their professional and personal growth. By delving into industries ranging from cybersecurity to real estate, they're not just preparing for the corporate world but also shaping their academic pursuits with practical experience.
