Oklahoma's waters are set to get a little cleaner thanks to a recent settlement between the state and poultry producer George's, Inc. Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced the details, where the company agrees to dish out $5 million for projects aimed at cleaning up and conserving water resources, in addition to legal fees. In tackling a pollution problem in the Illinois River Watershed, this settlement, according to Drummond, serves "to produce outcomes that serve everyone's interests," as reported by the official announcement from the state's Attorney General's office.

Under the settlement, George’s must implement a plan to reduce poultry litter in the Illinois River Watershed. Over the next seven years, the allowable litter levels will drop from 40% to 20%. The company will also contribute $250,000 to fund a Special Master who will monitor compliance and ensure litter does not enter other sensitive waterways.

Last month, a federal court held several poultry companies jointly responsible for pollution in the Illinois River Watershed. They were ordered to fund long-term clean-up efforts and limit where waste is spread. George’s settlement is separate from the ongoing cases involving other companies, such as Tyson and Cargill.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond said the settlement demonstrates responsible corporate behavior. The agreement resolves claims against George’s and could serve as a model for other companies facing similar lawsuits. George’s will also take active steps to reduce pollution in the Illinois River Watershed as part of the settlement.
