An Onslow County businessman, Jimmy John Brinkley, 49, of Swansboro, is facing serious legal trouble with charges of felony tax evasion. The N.C. Department of Revenue has filed three counts of Embezzlement of State Property against Brinkley. According to the press release, the charges stem from allegations that he misappropriated approximately $511,701 in state withholding taxes.
The indictments allege that Brinkley, president of Select Staffing and Labor of NC, Incorporated, assisted the business in a scheme to embezzle, misapply, and convert funds intended for the state treasury. The alleged activity occurred between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2023, involving North Carolina Withholding Tax meant for the N.C. Department of Revenue. Brinkley is scheduled for his first appearance in Wake County Superior Court today.
Following his arrest, Brinkley was released on a $50,000 secured bond after appearing before a Wake County magistrate. Special agents from the N.C. Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigations Division in Raleigh conducted an investigation into the records, uncovering the alleged misconduct.
