The passing of Victor Manuel Diaz, a Latino immigrant who tragically died in ICE custody while facing deportation, has ignited a firestorm of outcry over the conditions at Camp East Montana, a sprawling $1.24 billion privately operated immigration detention facility. Minneapolis Ward 9 Councilmember Jason Chavez took to social media to express his condolences and to critique the "unjust immigration system" that he says is responsible for Diaz's death and for tearing families apart.
Chavez's post does more than mourn. It asserts that Diaz was “kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis” and later died in detention under conditions criticized for inadequate access to medication and other alleged deficiencies. The distressing circumstances of Diaz’s death highlight not only a profound personal loss but also a broader systemic failure in the way immigration enforcement and detention are handled in this country. Reports indicate that detainees at Camp East Montana, where Diaz died, frequently face insufficient healthcare, adding to wider concerns about the facility’s operations.
