The ripple effect of a tenacious winter storm sweeping across much of the United States is being felt even in the typically temperate Phoenix, Arizona. More than 100 flights were canceled over a tumultuous weekend at Phoenix Sky Harbor, as per the information provided on the airport's website, creating a knock-on effect of travel disruptions well into the week.
Even in the absence of snowflakes and ice, Phoenix travelers are finding themselves caught in a maelstrom of rescheduling and delay. According to 12News, Monday continued to see delays and cancellations, adding stress for "some unlucky passengers," who, despite the clear skies above, are still at the mercy of distant storms. FlightAware has been actively tracking the numbers, spotting 155 delays and 92 cancellations specifically at Sky Harbor.
Passengers disrupted by cancellations are finding some solace knowing that airlines are legally obliged to refund any ticket, including non-refundable ones, if the cancellation has left them grounded and they no longer wish to travel. This process should take up to seven business days for credit card payments and 20 days for cash or check, according to a statement obtained by ABC15. Airlines are, however, not required by the U.S. Department of Transportation to compensate passengers for meals or lodging during such uncontrollable events as severe weather.
FlightAware's numbers highlight the day's total disruptions, while Sky Harbor's own updates reflect the rolling 24-hour impact. As of Saturday evening, no relent was expected; there were 132 cancellations projected for Sunday. Travelers are advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport in order to avoid unexpected delays. For the most current flight information, consulting Sky Harbor's flight delays and cancellations page is recommended.
Despite the challenges presented, airlines are making efforts to accommodate affected passengers, offering rebooking on later flights subject to seat availability, and in some cases even providing options with partner airlines. While many are finding themselves unexpectedly grounded, with patience and persistence, travelers are navigating their way through the storm’s sizable shadow over air travel.
