A parking-lot fight outside a Pearl City nightclub early Saturday ended with two people in handcuffs and two Honolulu police officers injured, authorities said.
Police said the officers were trying to break up an altercation in the club’s parking lot when a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman allegedly turned on them. Emergency medical services treated both officers at the scene, and they were reported to be in good condition.
The two suspects were arrested and remained in custody as investigators continued their work into the weekend.
According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the pair was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault against a law-enforcement officer and harassment of a law-enforcement officer.
State law and possible penalties
Under Hawaii statute, assault against a law-enforcement officer in the first degree is defined as intentionally or knowingly causing bodily injury to an officer who is engaged in the performance of duty, and it is classified as a class C felony.
The statute also outlines mandatory minimum sentencing or specific probation conditions that can apply upon conviction. For the exact statutory language, see law.upenn.edu for HRS § 707-712.5.
Nightlife safety in Pearl City
Violence flaring up around Pearl City nightlife is not a new concern. In 2019, two men were charged after a shooting outside a Pearl City club, a case that underlined how quickly late-night disputes can escalate. That incident, reported by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, has remained a reference point in local coverage of club-related violence.
Honolulu police say the investigation into this weekend’s attack is ongoing. Authorities have not released additional details on potential formal charges or booking information for the two suspects and are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department to assist investigators.
