What started as a court-ordered check on a Peoria home turned into a major animal sweep Wednesday, with city officials saying between 40 and 50 dogs were removed from a West Valley residence and taken into custody. Peoria animal-control officers and code-enforcement staff executed the court order at a home on Morningside Drive near 89th Avenue and Union Hills Drive, according to 12News. A Peoria Police Department spokesperson said the dogs were taken for safekeeping while investigators worked through the property.
City officials say the seizure is tied to prior animal-related complaints, and the investigation is still in progress as officers and animal-control staff document conditions and begin evaluating the animals.
It is the latest large-scale case in the West Valley at a time when local shelters are already feeling the squeeze. County shelter officials say intakes and stray animals typically surge around the holidays and during events like New Year’s fireworks, which can strain capacity, according to KJZZ. Other high-profile hoarding and neglect cases have surfaced in the region in recent years, as highlighted by ABC15, raising recurring questions about where to quickly place dozens of animals at once.
Investigation and next steps
Authorities say the court order at the Peoria home stemmed from earlier animal-related cases and that each of the seized dogs will be evaluated to determine whether any cruelty or neglect occurred, as reported by 12News. Police have not publicly identified the property owner and have not said whether criminal charges are expected, noting that detectives and animal-control investigators are still processing the scene.
Where the dogs will go
The dogs were taken into protective custody while veterinarians and shelter staff assess their health and behavior, Arizona's Family reports. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control operates regional intake centers, a call center and an online inquiry system to help with questions about reunification and sheltering options, according to county information pages.
