A somber incident unfolded in Pittsburgh's California-Kirkbride neighborhood over the weekend, leading to the critical injury of a young child due to a gunshot wound. According to reports from WTAE, a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head while he and his 9-year-old sibling were playing with a firearm in a basement on Kirkbride Street.
The shooting was reported around 9:45 a.m. yesterday, with police and emergency services promptly responding to the scene. Information provided by Public Information Officer Eliza Durham, as published by WPXI, outlined that no adults were present in the home when the incident occurred, and the adult responsible had just left for work. Both a 9-year-old and a 16-year-old, who were also at the home, were taken in for questioning regarding the circumstances of the shooting.
The 7-year-old victim was swiftly taken to a local hospital and underwent surgery, listed in critical condition. As of yet, no gun has been recovered from the home, and officers alongside the Mobile Crime Unit, Violent Crime Unit, and Homicide detectives continue to investigate the case. While charges have not been filed at this time, Durham indicated that this might change as the investigation proceeds.
