The tragic loss of a young life has come into focus as officials cite winter weather as a significant factor in the deadly crash that struck down 17-year-old Ishara Kami in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood last December. According to WPXI, an unexpected snow and ice storm impaired visibility and road conditions, causing a truck driver to lose control and slide onto the sidewalk along Brownsville Road, where Kami was walking home from school.
The City of Pittsburgh has responded to the incident by announcing two key action items. Carrick High School, where Kami was remembered for her gentle spirit and caring nature, will continue offering trauma-informed care to students and the community with assistance from the Center for Victims. Additionally, corridor improvements are slated for Brownsville Road, set to take place in 2027, which will include crucial curb extensions at West Woodford Avenue.
In a parallel effort to tackle the broader issue of traffic safety, the City's Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team completed an on-site evaluation at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Woodford Avenue. Curb extensions along West Woodford Avenue have been highlighted as a part of the safety overhaul, according to CBS News Pittsburgh. The team is focused on implementing changes to prevent future tragic incidents, working closely with the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.
