As Pittsburgh braces for a chilly Tuesday with temperatures expected to dip, CitiParks is stepping up by transforming five of its Healthy Active Living Senior Centers into temporary warming shelters. Open to all who need to escape the cold, these centers will extend their hours from 8 AM to 7 PM tomorrow, as reported by the official announcement by the City of Pittsburgh.
The usual operating hours for these centers are from 8 AM to 4 PM, but in response to the low temperatures forecasted, the following locations will be available for those looking for warmth: the Beechview, Greenfield, Homewood, Sheraden, and South Side Market House centers. Details about their addresses were released early yesterday.
Residents in need of a warm place can also visit the various CitiParks Recreation Centers listed below, which offer extended hours beyond the typical schedule. Despite the cold gusts expected to sweep through the streets, these refuges offer a respite from the bracing winter conditions. However, it should be noted that all these centers will remain closed today in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, leaving the city's denizens briefly without this resource on the national holiday.
For those not able to access the senior centers, several recreation centers also remain open throughout the city, offering a haven from the cold during various hours throughout the week. Places like the Ammon, Arlington, and Brookline centers maintain operations well into the evening, and full details on their locations and hours can be found on the city's official announcement.
