A Plainfield man, previously convicted of a felony, was denied pre-trial release after being charged with illegal possession of a loaded firearm. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres, in statements released earlier, detailed the charges against 30-year-old Deion Kidd following an incident on January 10. According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Kidd is charged with a Class 2 felony for aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 4 felony for aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and several misdemeanors, including resisting a police officer and possession of open alcohol by a driver.
The arrest occurred close to midnight when Naperville police noticed Kidd's vehicle make an erratic lane change. Suspicious of the vehicle's window tint and Kidd's movements towards the glove box and back seat, police initiated a stop. During the interaction, it's alleged that Kidd resisted as officers tried to open the glovebox, where they discovered a loaded Glock 46. "As a convicted felon, Mr. Kidd has forfeited his right to lawfully possess a firearm," Berlin said, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations and the commitment to public safety. Additionally, officers found an open bottle of tequila in the vehicle's trunk, accessible from the back seat.
Judge Joshua Dieden sided with the prosecution's motion to deny Kidd's pre-trial release, ensuring he remains in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for February 2, 2026, in front of Judge Mia McPherson. In their announcements, both Berlin and Arres praised the diligence of the Naperville Police Department in their proactive efforts to maintain community safety and remove dangerous weapons from the street.
While acknowledging the charges, the State's Attorney's office reminded the public that these accusations represent only charges and not proof of guilt. They underlined a defendant's right to a fair trial where the government bears the burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Kidd, with a birth date of January 24, 1995, awaits his day in court to challenge these allegations.
