Residents of Plymouth have a unique chance to peek behind the city’s snowy curtain as officials host a Winter Maintenance Open House on Jan. 23, from 2-5 p.m. at the Plymouth Maintenance Facility, located at 14900 23rd Ave. N. The event, corresponding with Winter Salt Awareness Week from Jan. 26-30, invites the public to explore the city's approach to snow and ice removal while highlighting environmental practices.
Community members can learn about Plymouth’s commitment to striking a careful balance between maintaining winter roads and the environment. Participants will be given the opportunity to check out snowplows and other anti-icing equipment, along with taking a guided tour inside the salt brine-making building. Amidst the interactive displays, attendees will have the chance to experience a snowplow ride, an aspect that is expected to attract adults and kids alike – children may even enter a drawing to win a ride to school in a plow truck.
According to an announcement by the City of Plymouth, there's a commitment to educate residents about "effectively using salt while minimizing its negative impacts on the environment." With environmental concerns increasing, this open house stands as an initiative to inform and build trust with the community regarding the city’s practices.
The event, which includes light refreshments for its visitors, is free and open to the public. However, city officials caution that in the event of a snow emergency, the open house could be called off. Any such notice will be promptly shared on the city's social media channels and the city website, ensuring that interested parties are kept in the loop.
