Three people were killed early yesterday in a three-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 80 near the Cordelia area of Fairfield, a deadly collision that shut the freeway for hours and choked pre-dawn traffic headed toward the Bay Area. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and have not yet released the victims' names.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the California Highway Patrol said the first reports of the crash came in at about 2:01 a.m., and troopers arrived on scene roughly six minutes later. The Chronicle also reported that all westbound lanes remained closed for several hours and did not fully reopen until about 6:41 a.m., with no additional details immediately available.
Crash Site Near Cordelia Scales
The wreck occurred near the busy Cordelia truck-scales area on westbound I-80, a long-standing commercial vehicle inspection point that processes heavy truck traffic, according to the Solano Transportation Authority. The STA notes that, together with Caltrans, it has planned upgrades at the site to tackle recurring backups and safety concerns, a reminder of how quickly incidents there can trigger major shutdowns on one of the region's key corridors.
This Stretch Has Seen Recent Crashes
This portion of I-80 has been no stranger to serious collisions this winter. Earlier this month, a deadly solo-vehicle crash shut down westbound lanes, NBC Bay Area reported. Traffic reporters have repeatedly flagged SigAlerts and drawn-out lane closures along I-80 through Solano County, leaving commuters stuck in lengthy delays, as KCRA has noted.
Investigation and What Drivers Should Know
The CHP says investigators are still working to determine what led to the multi-vehicle crash and have not yet released information on a possible cause. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, officers closed all westbound lanes for several hours while they worked the scene. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact the CHP Solano Area office, whose contact details are listed on the agency's website.
