A 23-year-old woman was critically wounded early Monday after someone in a dark-colored sedan opened fire on her parked car in the Illinois Medical District on Chicago’s Near West Side, authorities said. The shooting unfolded in the 600 block of South Paulina Street, on a stretch that runs through the Rush University Medical Center campus. She was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, and by mid-morning, no arrests had been reported. Detectives from the Belmont Area were handling the case.
According to CBS Chicago, the attack happened at about 5:24 a.m. Police said a dark-colored sedan pulled up alongside the woman’s parked vehicle and someone inside opened fire, hitting her several times. She was rushed to Stroger, and as of Monday morning, no one was in custody. Belmont Area detectives asked anyone with information to contact police.
Where it happened
The 600 block of South Paulina cuts through the heart of the Illinois Medical District, a dense cluster of hospitals, clinics, and medical offices on the Near West Side. Rush University Medical Center lists major medical buildings and entrances along Harrison and Paulina streets, placing the reported shooting scene on or right next to its campus. The heavy concentration of health care facilities brings a constant flow of staff, patients and visitors, even in the pre-dawn hours, which can complicate early evidence gathering.
Investigation underway
Officers spent the morning canvassing the area for witnesses and scouring nearby buildings for surveillance footage while evidence technicians processed the scene. CBS Chicago reported that no arrests had been made as of Monday morning and that the woman remained in critical condition at Stroger. Cook County Health identifies Stroger as the county’s major public hospital in the Illinois Medical District.
