The City of Raleigh is inviting residents to participate in the Trashion Show, a competition that encourages the creation of wearable art from recycled materials. Part of the annual Environmental Awards, the event is open to residents of Raleigh and its utility service areas, including Garner, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon. Participants are encouraged to showcase sustainable design through creative use of repurposed materials.
Submissions are open to students aged 10 and older, college students, and adults, with cash prizes available for winning entries. According to the City of Raleigh, each design must be made of at least 75 percent recycled materials. Participants are encouraged to use items such as plastic bottles or cardboard to create wearable art that highlights sustainability and the importance of reuse.
The application deadline for the Trashion Show is February 22. Applicants should submit photos or a video of no more than two minutes that explains the concept behind their design. The City’s Waste Wizard, available through the Raleigh Reuse App, can provide guidance on recyclable materials.
Entries will be reviewed by the Environmental Advisory Board and judged on originality, functionality, and overall construction. Competitors are divided into three categories: Youth (ages 10–18), College (ages 17 and older, currently enrolled in college), and Adult (18 and older, not a full-time student). First, second, and third place winners in each category will receive prizes ranging from $100 to $500. Winners will be recognized at the Earth Day Celebration at Dix Park on April 24.
