With a winter storm on the horizon, the city of Raleigh is taking steps to streamline its snow removal efforts. Downtown residents who typically park on the streets are encouraged to relocate their cars to specific public parking garages, as announced by Raleigh Parking. This measure is in place to ensure that transportation crews can more efficiently and safely clear the blankets of snow that are predicted to disrupt the city’s rhythm.
The gesture of goodwill comes with an added bonus for city dwellers—free parking. From 5 p.m. today until 7 a.m. on February 3rd, there will be no charge for parking in select garages throughout downtown. These include the Wilmington Street Garage on 117 S. Wilmington St, the Moore Square Garage at 233 S. Wilmington St, and the City Center / Red Hat Garage located at 429 S. Wilmington St. The aim is to provide transportation crews unfettered access to street surfaces, an essential task in mitigating the potential chaos that winter storms tend to unleash.
However, there's is a small catch; free parking has an expiration date. According to an announcement on the City of Raleigh website, vehicles that remain in the garages past 7 a.m. on February 3 will be subject to the regular parking rates. As the crews work tirelessly to plow and treat roads, their hope is that this incentive will make it easier for everyone to keep safe and travel with ease during the snowy conditions.
