An argument over the price of an energy drink ended with bullets fired into a south Memphis convenience store on Wednesday, and police are now trying to track down two men seen on surveillance video just before the shooting.

The confrontation happened at Rooster’s Market near the intersection of South Perkins Road and Cottonwood Road, according to witnesses and officials. Cameras recorded two men walking into the shop, and moments later shots were fired into the building. No injuries were reported.

What police say

According to the Memphis Police Department, officers were called to Rooster’s Market on Wednesday after staff reported that two Hispanic males had come into the store and were upset about the price of a Red Bull energy drink.

Police say the men left the shop, then one of them pulled a revolver and fired into the building before both suspects took off on foot heading east on Cottonwood. The case is being investigated as an aggravated assault, and detectives are reviewing the store’s surveillance footage as part of the search.

Video and local reporting

Local station Action News 5 reported that the victim told investigators the dispute started over the store’s pricing of Red Bull energy drinks.

The station published a summary of the surveillance video, including still images from the footage, and quoted authorities who responded to the scene. Action News 5 also noted that no arrests had been reported at the time of its story.

Perkins Road context

The area around South Perkins Road has seen other violent incidents in recent years. Hoodline previously covered a late night shooting at Las Ilas Marias near the same intersection last April that left multiple people hospitalized.

That earlier case, along with other incidents in the neighborhood, has fed ongoing concerns about safety along busy commercial stretches in the Parkway Village area.
