A man was found shot on the 5800 block of Jardin Place in Southeast Memphis Sunday night, leaving him in critical condition, while another person was detained at the scene as investigators try to piece together what happened.
Memphis police responded to the shooting around 8 p.m. Sunday, according to WREG. Officers located the male victim at the scene before he was transported to the hospital, and the station reports he remains in critical condition. Police have not said what led up to the shooting, and the case remains a developing story as of Sunday night.
The block sits within the 38141 ZIP code, an area of Southeast Memphis patrolled out of the Memphis Police Department's Ridgeway Station on Ridgeway Road, per CrimeStoppers Memphis. Critically injured gunshot victims in the city are routinely taken to Regional One Health's Elvis Presley Trauma Center, the region's only Level 1 trauma facility within 150 miles, according to prior Hoodline reporting.

Part of a Rough Stretch for Southeast Memphis

Those recurring incidents come even as Memphis has posted broad citywide gains against violent crime this year. Reported major violent crime dropped 31.5% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to preliminary Tennessee Bureau of Investigation figures released by the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission. The Memphis Police Department's Homicide Bureau also reported an 81% clearance rate in the second quarter of 2026, up sharply from 47% a year earlier, amid a 36% year-to-date drop in Part I major crime.
Staffing Shortages Persist Amid Recovery
Those improvements have unfolded despite an ongoing officer shortage. As of March 2026, the department employed 1,881 sworn officers, roughly 600 short of its authorized target of 2,500. The gains also follow a broader multi-year decline: recorded homicides fell 24% and robberies dropped 30% in 2025 compared to 2024, reversing a spike that had peaked in 2023, according to the Council on Criminal Justice. Much of that turnaround has been tied to federal crime reduction efforts launched in 2025, including National Guard support and the federally backed Memphis Safe Task Force, which generated thousands of arrests into early 2026.
For residents near Jardin Place, those citywide statistics offer little immediate comfort. Free cable gun locks remain available at five Memphis Police Department stations, including the nearby Ridgeway Station, part of ongoing community violence reduction efforts.
