Reno's furry residents are in for a treat as the city is set to unveil a new dog play area at Northwest Park on January 30. In a move celebrated by local pet owners and canine aficionados alike, the initiative represents a classic case of transforming an unused space into a communal gem. Located on what was once a community garden site near the baseball fields on Apollo Way, the new play area promises to provide a safe and welcoming environment for both dogs and their human companions to enjoy.
According to a press statement released by the City of Reno, Ward 5 Councilmember Devon Reese praised the project's collaborative spirit. "This project really reflects the power of collaboration," he told the City of Reno. The initiative has drawn on the support of a range of community partners and local businesses, which has been pivotal in repurposing the underutilized parcel into a vibrant meeting spot for residents and their pets.
The effort was kick-started by a $7,500 Placemaking Grant from the National Association of Realtors and saw significant contributions from Sierra Nevada Realtors and Tholl Fencing—the latter donating staff time and fencing expertise. The dog play area is designed to accommodate dogs of any size and serve as an easily accessible neighborhood amenity.
For those interested in contributing to future park improvements or earning recognition as project supporters, the City of Reno Parks and Recreation Department is open to donations. Contributions can be made online, with donors requested to include "Northwest Reno Dog Park" in the comment section of their gift, or through the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada by check. The City of Reno's press release states tax deduction letters will be made available upon request, with checks to be addressed to 50 Washington Street, Suite 300, Reno, NV 89503, and noted for "City of Reno Fund – Northwest Reno Dog Park" in the memo line.
