A 36-year-old Mexican citizen has been sentenced to 42 months in a U.S. federal prison after pleading guilty to the charge of illegal reentry into the United States, an episode marking his fifth such offense, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Texas.
Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed down the sentence to Jose de Jesus Galicia-Castillo after his September 24, 2025, guilty plea; it was revealed during the hearing that his record tallies two prior convictions for the same crime still he continued to cross the border with no authorization, defying the risk of legal retribution, a cycle indicative of a larger systemic issue that has yet to be thoroughly addressed. Galicia-Castillo, previously removed from the U.S. in 2008 and having illegally returned multiple times, was last apprehended on July 25, 2025, by Customs and Border Protection agents near Falfurrias, Texas.
The U.S. Attorney's Office announcement of the sentencing also noted that Galicia-Castillo is anticipated to face removal proceedings following his imprisonment, a common procedure for non-citizens convicted of crimes within the United States.
