Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), alongside other Republican senators are pushing Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) for answers and action in light of allegations involving extensive fraud related to federal child care funding in Minnesota. An official letter sent by the senators highlighted their concerns and demanded transparency and accountability from Walz's administration.
According to their correspondence, released by Tillis's Senate page, the senators stated, "The state's apparent negligent management of federal funds raises significant concerns about the adequacy of the state’s oversight, verification, and compliance systems for safeguarding taxpayer dollars intended to support vulnerable children and working families." The letter goes on to emphasize the Senate's right to thoroughly investigate and to potentially freeze child care payments in order to directly assess how funds are being utilized.
This demand comes on the heels of a larger investigation by federal prosecutors into the Minnesota social services' handling of funds, with speculations that the misappropriation extends to not only child care but also nutrition, Medicaid, and housing assistance programs. Reports suggest that there has been a misuse of federal funds since as early as 2018, including the Feeding Our Future scheme, where individuals were convicted for misappropriating school meal pandemic relief funds.
The senators have endorsed the actions of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which, under the previous Trump administration, has decided to temporarily stop child care payments to Minnesota pending further verification and audits. They made clear their constitutional prerogative, stating that the Constitution "grants Congress the power of the purse, and the United States Senate is exercising its duty to ensure proper stewardship of federal taxpayer dollars for child care programs," as reported on Tillis's Senate page.
These inquiries pose critical questions about the governance of federal aid programs and the mechanisms in place to prevent and detect fraud. The Republican senators are continuing their call for a resolution that ensures integrity and accountability in Minnesota's handling of these vital federal resources.
