The National Weather Service office serving Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., has issued a Cold Weather Advisory in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning due to forecast low wind chills. The advisory covers Washington, D.C., and parts of Maryland and Virginia, where wind chill values are expected to range from 5 to 8 degrees below zero.
The advisory notes that wind chill values of 5 to 8 degrees below zero may pose a risk of hypothermia without proper precautions. The NWS advises wearing appropriate winter clothing, including hats and gloves, and limiting time outdoors when possible. The advisory also recommends ensuring that outdoor pets and animals have access to warm, dry shelter and unfrozen water.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook for the remainder of the week shows continued cold conditions due to an Arctic air mass in the region. Gale warnings are in effect for parts of the Chesapeake Bay and the tidal Potomac River, along with freezing spray advisories. The NWS forecasts that dangerously low wind chills may persist on several nights throughout the week.
Residents are advised to take precautions to reduce the risk of cold-related health issues, including wearing appropriate clothing such as hats and gloves and exercising caution when traveling outdoors. Special attention is recommended for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without adequate shelter, who are at increased risk from the cold.
Local authorities are increasing outreach to inform residents of safety measures to prevent hypothermia and other cold-related illnesses. Residents are encouraged to follow recommended precautions as temperatures remain low.
