A stolen vehicle's mad dash through Cambridge ended in a harrowing crash, leaving one person in grave condition. In a recent update from the Cambridge Police Department, officials detailed the arrest of 57-year-old David Powell from Roslindale on multiple charges following a high-speed incident and subsequent collision on Waverly St.
It began on Monday when Cambridge Police, aided by nearby law enforcement, were alerted to a stolen car speeding toward their jurisdiction. Attempts to stop the vehicle on Massachusetts Ave were unsuccessful, and for safety reasons, officers did not pursue it as it fled. Moments later, a crash that drew multiple first responder units jolted the city’s calm. The crumpled car, now lodged against a building facade on the corner of Waverly St. and Erie St., ended its brief flight—and unfortunately involved an innocent bystander in the chaos.
The police swiftly apprehended Powell after a foiled attempt to escape on foot. "Officers located Powell a short distance away and placed him under arrest," according to the social media post by the Cambridge Police. Both the suspect and the pedestrian victim were rushed to a local hospital, with the latter's prognosis being listed as very serious.
Powell is now facing a slew of charges including Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Personal Injury, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle. The Cambridge Police, working with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police, continue their investigation, hinting that additional charges may be on the table pending further discoveries.
