Commuters in Sacramento faced significant delays after two consecutive days of traffic disruptions caused by big rigs. This morning, a big rig jackknifed and blocked the crucial connector ramp from eastbound Highway 50 to northbound Interstate 5, as reported by CBS Sacramento. No injuries were reported, though the incident caused considerable traffic congestion with no immediate estimated time for the reopening of the ramp; authorities advised drivers to brace for extended delays.
Similarly, yesterday morning, an overturned big rig posed a challenge for eastbound drivers on Interstate 80 attempting to connect to Interstate 5. This event was covered by MSN. The highway was clogged for hours before the vehicle could be uprighted and removed from the scene, the driver of this truck suffered minor cuts and wounds. During this time, a Sigalert was issued indicating the severity of the congestion and the expected extended duration of the traffic implications and although eastbound lanes were affected, westbound traffic on I-80 remained uninterrupted.
The California Highway Patrol has not said what caused either big rig to lose control. CHP and Caltrans are working to clear the crashes and manage traffic. In the meantime, drivers are advised to use alternate routes, monitor traffic updates, and remain patient as crews work to reopen the freeways.
