As the new year begins, some residents are choosing to take part in “Dry January,” a month-long break from alcohol. The Saint Louis County Department of Public Health is using social media to highlight the health benefits of reducing or avoiding alcohol consumption.
According to the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health, drinking less alcohol can lower the risk of cancer, heart disease, liver disease, and stroke. Officials also note additional benefits such as improved sleep, potential weight loss, and saving money.
The health department acknowledges that cutting back on alcohol can be challenging, especially in social settings, but says resources and support are available through local advocacy groups and public health programs. Residents are encouraged to participate in Dry January or consider reducing alcohol intake beyond the month.
