A routine drive in southeast Salem turned into a high-adrenaline nightmare on Jan. 16, ending with a man in jail and a pickup truck under a search warrant. Investigators say what started as a road rage dustup escalated into an attempted armed robbery, with an AR-style rifle allegedly used to smash a car window and demand cash before the victims managed to speed away.

How the attack unfolded

According to investigators, the confrontation kicked off near Sunnyside Road SE and Boone Road SE when a white Toyota Tundra reportedly rammed a vehicle several times, then stopped. The driver allegedly climbed out holding an AR-style carbine, used it to smash the driver’s side window, pointed the weapon and demanded money, according to KATU. The victims told police they managed to pull away from the scene and called 911, and the case landed with the Salem Police Violent Crimes Unit.

Search warrant leads to arrest

Detectives say they later tracked down the white pickup and identified 29-year-old Nathan Johnathan Muniz as a suspect. On Jan. 29, Salem officers and federal agents served a search warrant at a residence on Sunnyside Road SE. During the search, they reported finding an AR-style rifle with a collapsible stock, along with vehicle parts that appeared to match the Tundra described in the attack. Muniz was arrested at the scene and booked into the Marion County Jail, according to KPTV.

Charges and next steps

Muniz was booked on charges of first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and criminal mischief. He is scheduled for arraignment Friday afternoon in Marion County Court, where prosecutors are expected to formally lay out the case, according to KATU. The charges are allegations at this stage, and the courtroom will be where the details start to get tested.

A broader pattern

The incident lands against a backdrop of rising concern over gun violence in Marion County. A county report found that shootings have more than tripled over the past decade and noted that many of those incidents grow out of personal conflicts that spiral quickly, including road rage run-ins, according to Salem Reporter. Local officials have been pushing for stronger prevention and intervention efforts to cool down the kinds of everyday confrontations that can turn life-threatening in seconds.

What to expect at court

Muniz remains in the Marion County Jail awaiting his arraignment, where prosecutors are expected to file charging documents and the judge will hear arguments on bail and set the next court dates, according to KPTV. Salem Police say the investigation is still active, and more details could surface once the case starts moving through the courts.
