On Saturday, the life of Sha Reh, the 19-year-old sole survivor of a heart-wrenching shooting in West Valley City in 2024, was commemorated at a service held in a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Salt Lake City. Friends, family, and community members gathered to pay tribute to the young man who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on January 11, KUTV reported.
Despite being blinded from a gunshot wound to the head during the tragic event where he lost his mother and siblings to a murder-suicide committed by his father, Reh demonstrated an unwavering spirit of forgiveness, having said, "But I still love him," when informed of the circumstances after waking up in the hospital, according to Michelle Schmidt and Bridget Harding, family friends interviewed by ABC4. The journey following the incident led him to graduate from Granger High School and then to the University of Utah, where he began his legal studies two weeks before his death.
In the wake of Sha Reh's passing, a statement from his extended family, posted by KSL, expressed an "immediate and infinite goodness of God," acknowledging the generosity and love received from people worldwide and inviting everyone to live with kindness and humility in remembrance of Sha.
Reflecting on Sha Reh's time on campus, where he only experienced a mere week before his passing, Schmidt told KSL, "He was so happy, he was so focused," capturing the essence of a young man who, despite the darkness and loss, found joy and purpose in his brief time as a college student, his name, meaning "a life endures" or "a light that remains," serves as a poignant reminder of his enduring impact and resilient spirit.
Sha Reh was laid to rest next to his mother and siblings at the Elysian Burial Gardens after a private interment service, leaving behind a legacy of determination, love, and extraordinary forgiveness that continues to touch the hearts of all who knew him or learned of his story, ABC4 noted.
