San Diego's remote East County witnessed a heroic display of coordination and skill as the Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter teamed up with CAL FIRE San Diego rescue personnel for a double emergency operation. Events unfolded gradually last Sunday, when a distress signal led the helicopter crew to a motorcyclist downed in Corral Canyon near Pine Valley.
With a ground landing out of the question, due to the challenging terrain and heavy vegetation, ASTREA's Copter 10 had to quickly stop and refuel before they could conduct hoist operations. The first patient, a 53-year-old man, was displaying symptoms of a head injury after an apparent motorcycle accident. A CAL FIRE rescue specialist was deployed to the scene, and the injured man was safely extracted and passed on to the waiting hands of paramedics in a nearby meadow.
Scarcely had they departed on their first mission when Copter 10 was called to aid a 57-year-old woman who had suffered an ankle injury on the East Trail. The rugged and heavily vegetated lie of the land necessitated another precisely executed hoist. It underscored the relentless efforts of these teams to reach those stranded, no matter the obstacles nature throws in their path. The woman was hoisted up and transported to a landing zone for medical care.
These back-to-back rescues underscored the critical importance of interagency cooperation and the specialized abilities of ASTREA and CAL FIRE teams in emergencies where every second counts. San Diego County Sheriff's Office took the opportunity to remind anyone venturing into remote areas to always prepare and carry a communication device with fully charged batteries. The Sheriff's Office statement emphasized, "In the event of an emergency, early notification can significantly reduce response times and improve outcomes."
