As of today, visitors planning a trip to Balboa Park can streamline their experience by purchasing parking passes through a newly launched online portal. The portal, according to the City of San Diego, allows for advance purchases with discounted rates specifically for City of San Diego residents who go through the residency verification process on the site.
Paid parking is set to take effect on January 5, marking a shift from the current free parking system. Therefore, park-goers should be aware that to receive the discounted resident rate, they must verify their residency via the portal, which may take up to two business days. However, free parking hasn't been entirely rolled to the curb. There's still up to three hours of complimentary parking at the Inspiration Point parking lot, so those who can snag a spot there will save a few bucks.
The daily and hourly rates are structured in tiers depending on the proximity to the park's center, with further lots like Pepper Grove, Federal, and Marston Point offering a flat $10 per day for non-residents, and a halved rate of $5 for verified residents. As a caveat, these rates are exclusive to the online platform, as the meter kiosks on-site won't be able to confirm a visitor's resident status or apply the reduced rates — yet. The city plans to introduce this verification feature to the kiosks in the future.
Annual, quarterly, and monthly virtual parking passes are also available, with San Diego residents enjoying significantly lower rates, such as $150 for an annual pass compared to $300 for non-residents. On the streets within Balboa Park, meter rates will cost park-goers $2.50 per hour, with a maximum of $10 per day, applicable to both residents and non-residents. It's worth noting that the meters outside the park boundaries and zoo lots follow different rules and rates.
Parking enforcement for these paid areas operates daily from 8 AM to 8 PM. Disabled Person license plate or placard holders will continue to park for free at meters, and blue spaces marked for disabled parking will remain free in parking lots. Not to forget, a widened free tram service and a shuttle for park employees and volunteers will also be part of the new parking ecosystem, aiming to maintain Balboa Park's accessibility amidst these changes.
