
Tragedy struck off the coast of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, as the U.S. Coast Guard mounted a search and rescue response for a 72-foot fishing vessel, the FV Lily Jean, which sent out an emergency signal Friday morning. The distress beacon was activated around 6:50 a.m., approximately 25 miles from the coast, setting off a massive effort to locate the missing scalloper and its crew. According to NBC Boston, despite immediate attempts to establish contact, the crew of the Lily Jean was unresponsive, leading to the deployment of several Coast Guard units.
The search operation quickly became a somber affair, with the discovery of an unresponsive body recovered from the water. The rescue teams, which included an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a small boat crew from Station Gloucester, also found a debris field in the area of the beacon's activation. Alongside the grim find was an unoccupied life raft, associated with the Lily Jean, as pointed out by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Details about the number of individuals aboard the fishing vessel were confirmed by Gloucester's city council president, Tony Gross, who said the Lily Jean sailed with six crew members. The rescue crews located a debris field in the vicinity of the [emergency] activation, the Coast Guard stated, highlighting the severity of the incident. This was further corroborated by an interview Tony Gross gave, as reported by the Boston Globe, in which he shared information about the missing vessel in collaboration with other city council members and Gloucester's mayor, Paul Lundberg.
With the recovery of the one body, the fate of the other five crew members remains uncertain. The Coast Guard's efforts to find any additional survivors are ongoing, and they have committed to providing updates as new details become available. The Coast Guard Cutter Thunder Bay was additionally diverted to aid in the search, highlighting the urgency and scale of the response to this maritime disaster.
