A tragic New Year's Day incident in Fort Worth has ended with one woman dead and a security guard in custody after a shooting in the 2600 block of South Riverside Drive. DFW Scanner reports that Fort Worth police responded to the scene at approximately 5:44 pm yesterday, where they discovered the woman with a fatal gunshot wound to her chest.

The suspect, a security guard employed at the location, has been detained by officers after the altercation that led to the shooting. According to the WFAA, the guard had asked the woman to vacate the premises when an argument ensued. After the suspect pepper-sprayed her, police say the situation escalated when she retrieved a stabbing weapon from nearby.

The encounter took a deadly turn as the woman advanced on the security guard with the weapon, prompting him to discharge his firearm, fatally injuring her. Paramedics pronounced the woman deceased at the scene, and her identity will later be confirmed by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.
