Senator Ruben Gallego has been vocal about his concerns regarding an ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis and potential immigration enforcement actions in Phoenix. In a recent press conference and following media reports of ICE operations intensifying, Gallego criticized the agency for what he perceives as racial profiling and urged Arizona residents to stay alert. According to ABC15, Gallego said, "We in this office are going to do everything we can to hold them accountable, to stop their goonish natures, and hold them accountable."
During his address, Senator Gallego questioned the conduct of ICE agents involved in the Minneapolis event. "Why are these men walking around videoing with their phone cameras in one hand, and holding a handgun in the other? That’s not proper weapons handling, as someone that has served in the military," Gallego told ABC15. He went on to stress that advances must swiftly be made in terms of oversight on ICE, considering proposals from Democrat colleagues advocating for reform. Amidst this domestic focus, President Trump and his administration have been occupied discussing international affairs and military interventions.
Gallego emphasized the pressing issues middle-class Americans are currently facing concerning the cost of living, meeting basic needs, and healthcare affordability. As reports from KJZZ indicate, the Senator remains apprehensive about potential ICE activities in Phoenix and has warned Arizonans to prepare. "Because they are not afraid to detain US citizens for as long as they can," Gallego said, addressing concerns of racial profiling by the agency.
Gallego's comments underline a disconnect between the pressing domestic issues like healthcare and the Trump administration's focus on foreign policy and law enforcement tactics that have sparked controversy. Approaching another possible government shutdown with federal funding on the line, Gallego is pushing forward, relentlessly advocating for systemic improvements. In the sphere of immigration enforcement, Gallego called onto Arizonans to "remained civil and make sure they protect themselves," including carrying IDs or passports when out, as reported by KJZZ.
Ahead of potential increased ICE operations in Phoenix, Gallego and his office are seeking ways to rein in the agency. Legislation sponsored by Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy looks to reform the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, proposing a range of reforms. These include requirements for warrants for arrests and to cease agents from wearing masks during operations, Axios revealed in their coverage on the forthcoming legislation. As Gallego persists in his call for accountability and vigilance, the country watches and waits to see how these potential ICE operations and the government's handling of domestic challenges will unfold.
