Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is stepping up pressure on President Donald Trump’s administration to tackle soaring housing costs that are hitting families hard in his state. Kelly sent a letter to Trump and the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner, calling out the administration's actions that he believes are exacerbating the affordability crisis. In the letter, as reported by Senator Kelly's press release, he described the pressing situation for Arizona families who have seen rents and home prices surge beyond sustainable levels.
According to Kelly's letter, the Phoenix metropolitan area is an example of the housing crunch, where renters pay about $1,849 per month, and the average Phoenix resident earns only $67,500 annually. This calculation puts many families in a position where they spend over 30 percent of their income on housing, which can make managing monthly expenses challenging. The Senator pointed out that "Arizonans continue to struggle with a long-term trend of higher home prices and rents rising much faster than incomes."
Kelly's concerns extend to homeowners as well, who face escalating insurance and utility costs. He cited specific troubles for those in areas susceptible to environmental risks such as wildfire, drought, and extreme heat. "The cost of maintaining a home has also increased," he wrote. Homeowners insurance premiums, in particular, have spiked, creating additional obstacles for Arizona residents.
In his critique of the administration's policies, Kelly directed attention to the increased tariffs on steel and aluminum, along with the threat of additional tariffs, which he contends have led to pricier construction materials and appliances. "Your Administration’s policies are directly contributing to these high costs," he relayed, suggesting that these economic measures are slowing the rate of new housing development and consequently making it harder for Americans to find affordable homes, as stated in the same press release.
Senator Kelly isn't merely voicing problems; he's advocating for legislative solutions that have already gained bipartisan support. He helped pass the ROAD to Housing Act and introduced the HOPE for Homeownership Act to tackle issues related to housing supply and the prevalence of Wall Street investment in single-family homes. Meanwhile, he's calling on President Trump to reverse course on certain policies and work with Congress to deliver relief to struggling families.
Kelly's appeals end on a note of collaboration and urgency: "Arizona families deserve better. They need an administration that is truly committed to lowering housing costs and strengthening the programs that are proven to work." He declared his readiness to collaborate with the administration and congressional members to ease the housing burden on Americans, urging Trump "to start by ending these tariffs that are jacking up the cost of building new homes," according to Senator Kelly's website.
