Travelers experienced significant disruption on Thursday, as harsh weather led to the closure of major highways and a series of vehicle incidents in Yavapai County. According to a report by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office (YCSO), a slew of weather-related mishaps included cars and semi-trucks sliding off roads and injury accidents, especially impacting Interstate 40, which was shut down for several hours, and causing delays on I-17.
Updates released later on indicated that both affected interstates were reopened, with I-17 Northbound at General Crook Trail and I-40 Eastbound in Ash Fork cleared by later in the afternoon. The swift response to reopen the roadways was a necessary relief for many, but the YCSO stressed to drivers the importance of avoiding backroads in such conditions. Specifically, they advised against using the likes of Drake Road near Paulden when I-40 is closed.
Community members in Bagdad were caught off guard by an unanticipated snowfall, which was responsible for at least one injury accident. YCSO deputies were dispatched to the scene, marking it as another testament to the unpredictable nature of winter weather in the region. Multiple slide-offs were reported on Iron Springs Road, including a crash where a vehicle ended up 20 feet off the road near Sedona.
The YCSO's response to these incidents underlines the critical nature of caution during adverse weather conditions. They enforce the call for safer driving practices, reminding the public that "deputies responded to several weather related incidents," including handling the aftermath of vehicles losing control on slick surfaces. As local authorities continue to manage unexpected weather, they urge drivers to remain vigilant and to strictly adhere to safety advisories.
