Months of a persistent sewage stench have turned daily life at the Tanglewest condominium community near the Galleria into something no one signed up for. Neighbors say the strong odor has hovered over courtyards and seeped into homes since early November, and it has stuck around despite at least one visit from city crews. Residents are now worried about health risks, repeated backups, and what the mess could do to their property values, especially as the visible cleanup drags on and equipment sits in place week after week.
City crews initially responded and broke up a concrete clog, but property managers told residents that the first repair was botched and that concrete had been poured into the sewer line, which then led to sewage backing up into units a few days later, as reported by Click2Houston. After repeated attempts to get Public Works back out to the complex, management urged residents to file 3-1-1 complaints. Crews eventually returned and broke up the clog again, which helped cut down the odor but left hoses, broken concrete, and mud scattered throughout the property.
Residents say the fix made things worse
"Everybody in the community started noticing this really bad smell, really bad," resident Barbara Justin said, describing weeks of on-and-off odors and backups. Justin and other homeowners told Click2Houston they fear the lingering stench, along with the torn-up ground and visible debris, could scare off potential buyers and drag down values in the complex.
Where the complex sits
The Tanglewest community is in the Galleria and Tanglewood area west of Loop 610, with townhomes and condos clustered along Doliver Drive and Valley Forge Drive. Public property listings show multiple units there and list sewer service as public, which lines up with neighborhood records and real estate listings.
City and HOA response
The homeowners' association says it has limited leverage to speed up the work and is waiting on the city's Public Works crews to fully complete repairs. Residents say they were told crews planned to return on Dec. 23, but that follow-up visit never happened, leaving homeowners and managers pushing for a clear schedule and a firm end date.

Neighbors who are still dealing with backups or strong odors are being urged to file service requests through the city's 3-1-1 system, so Public Works can log and prioritize the complaints. According to Houston 311, residents can submit requests online at any time or call the 24/7 call center to open and track a case.
Until the sewer line is fully cleared and repairs are wrapped up, Tanglewest residents say they plan to keep filing tickets and pressing the city to finish the job. In the meantime, the hoses, broken concrete, and stubborn smell have left many wondering how long the disruption will last and what it might mean for the neighborhood's market appeal.
