In the heart of Socorro, Texas, a beloved tradition brought warmth to the Rio Vista Community Center this morning, where local seniors gathered in a jovial celebration honoring Dia De Los Reyes Magos, also known as Three Kings Day. According to a Facebook post from the City of Socorro, attendees of the event shared in the cutting and distribution of the Rosca de Reyes, a traditional festive bread that conceals a special surprise within its sweet, circular loaf.
As per the event's customs, a lucky few found a figure of the baby Jesus nestled in their slice of Rosca, a sign meant to symbolize luck and responsibility, as those who unearth the figure are traditionally tasked with hosting an upcoming celebration for the Day of the Candles, or Candlemas. The community center was abuzz as the seniors exchanged stories and laughter, the air infused with the scent of the sweet bread that is shared as part of the festivities that culturally extend the Christmas season in many Spanish-speaking countries. The day was filled with cheer as attendees enjoyed a slice or two of the sweet bread, many eagerly anticipating the reveal of the hidden figurines.
This celebration, deeply rooted in Christian traditions and Latino culture, allows the seniors of Socorro to connect with their heritage while engaging in a communal experience that arguably defines communal life itself, those familiar bonds forged over shared meals, narratives, and customs, which are passed down through generations to punctuate our years with moments of communal joy. Each January, the event at the Rio Vista Community Center serves as a nod to these traditions and the rich tapestry of cultural practices that make up the local community.
