Last Saturday, a discovery was made at Spud Point Marina in Bodega Bay, where a Sonoma County Parks Unit Deputy was called to a report of a stolen boat trailer. Documentation of the incident led to the missing property being entered into the stolen vehicle system, a mundane yet crucial step in what would become a significant break in a local crime operation. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, following up on surveillance footage, spotted the trailer hitched to a white 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck, initiating a deeper dive into the case that would soon unfold.
This dive led detectives to a commercial area on the 100 block of W Barham Avenue in Santa Rosa, where they encountered 42-year-old Jason Ramos and three additional stolen trailers in various stages of disassembly. The scene revealed the workings of an illicit chop shop, a clandestine operation where stolen vehicles are dismantled and sold for parts. Ramos was detained, and subsequent to the discovery, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office arrested him on a slew of charges. According to a social media post from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, these include "three counts of vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, violation of Postrelease Community Supervision (PRCS), and operating a chop shop."
Apprehended and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility, Ramos is currently being held without bail. The severity of the allegations points to a zero-tolerance stance for criminal enterprises that challenge the safety and security of Sonoma County’s residents and their personal property. In a statement procured by Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, Sergeant Juan Valencia, Public Information Officer, remarked, "The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping our community safe."
