A fatal crash occurred yesterday morning on the South Loop when a utility pickup and an 18-wheeler collided in the westbound lanes of I-610, authorities reported. The incident took place around 9:25 a.m. in the 5500 block of South Loop East near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A passenger in the Ford F450 was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following the collision, the tractor-trailer lost control, dragging the pickup into a grassy area where both vehicles struck a steel retaining wall and a light pole.
How The Crash Unfolded
According to the City of Houston, HPD Vehicular Crimes Division officers reported that a white Ford F450 traveling westbound on South Loop East changed lanes and struck the front-right tire of a white Volvo tractor-trailer. Investigators said the tractor-trailer then lost control, dragging the Ford across to the far-right lanes and into a grassy area before both vehicles collided with a retaining wall and a light pole.
CenterPoint Confirms Employee Was Killed
CenterPoint Energy told Click2Houston that the pickup was a company vehicle carrying two employees. One worker was able to exit the truck, while the other was trapped and later pronounced dead. A company spokesperson said CenterPoint is supporting the employee’s family and expressed appreciation for the Houston Fire Department and other emergency personnel for their response.
Two-Hour Rescue, Major Backup On The Loop
Houston Fire Department crews spent nearly two hours rescuing the trapped passenger in an operation that unfolded in view of backed-up traffic. TranStar traffic feeds showed the tractor-trailer ended up off the right side of the roadway, as per the Houston Chronicle. Local reports indicated the crash involved four vehicles, and the main lanes remained closed through much of the morning, with authorities clearing the scene shortly after 3 p.m.
