A 23-year-old Chicago man is facing a first-degree murder charge after police say a 26-year-old woman was shot and killed in the South Shore neighborhood. Travale Smith was taken into custody and is also charged with a felony weapons offense. The deadly shooting happened in the 7100 block of South Ridgeland Avenue, according to police.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, officers arrested Smith on Jan. 9 at about 3:17 p.m. in the 1300 block of East 60th Street, after identifying him as the suspect in the Ridgeland Avenue shooting. The outlet reports he was booked on one count of first-degree murder and a separate felony weapons charge, and that his next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
Legal consequences
Under Illinois law, first-degree murder is defined in the Criminal Code and comes with a strict sentencing framework. State statutes set a typical prison range of roughly 20 to 60 years, and judges may impose extended or enhanced terms in aggravating circumstances. Mandatory firearm enhancements can add decades and, in some situations, lead to a life sentence. The details are laid out in state law (720 ILCS 5/9-1; 730 ILCS 5/5-8-1).

Police told FOX 32 Chicago they identified Smith as the offender and that detectives are continuing to investigate the killing. Smith is due back in court Monday, when prosecutors are expected to lay out the next steps in the case. Police say the investigation remains active and are asking anyone with information to contact authorities.
