A 24-year-old man ended up in both a hospital bed and handcuffs after he accidentally shot himself in the leg early Friday in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood. Officers found the wounded man around 3 a.m. in the 7800 block of South Muskegon Avenue and took him to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Chicago police said they recovered a firearm at the scene and arrested the man after determining he did not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card or a Concealed Carry License. Police said he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and that charges are pending while detectives continue their investigation. The information was attributed to the Chicago Police Department.
Legal implications
The Illinois State Police requires Illinois residents to have a FOID card to legally possess firearms in the state, with eligibility rules and application steps detailed on the agency’s website. The Illinois State Police also oversees the Concealed Carry Licensing program and notes that lacking the proper documentation can expose a person to criminal penalties, depending on the circumstances. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges after reviewing the investigation and any evidence recovered.
South Shore and similar incidents
Accidental, self-inflicted shootings and related arrests have cropped up before on Chicago’s South Side, highlighting how quickly routine handling of a gun can turn into an injury and a criminal case. The Chicago Sun-Times reported a similar South Shore incident in 2023, when a man was hospitalized after apparently shooting himself during an argument.
Police did not immediately release the man’s name, and Area detectives are still investigating. The extent of any charges will be determined as investigators and prosecutors review the case. For the initial report and police attribution, see FOX 32 Chicago.
