Last night's clash had the San Antonio Spurs clinching a solid victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, ending the game at 107-91. Keldon Johnson led the charge with a notable 27 points, complemented by Victor Wembanyama's double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds, according to KSAT. The Spurs' efforts were enough to overcome the stellar 38-point triple-double performance by Luka Doncic, who also racked up 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
The win pushed San Antonio into second place in the Western Conference, a substantial feat considering they only managed to hit 4 out of 25 attempts from beyond the arc. LeBron James, notably missing from action due to arthritis and sciatica, could only to watch as his team's three-game winning streak was halted. The absence of Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura due to calf issues further compounded the Lakers' challenges on the court.
On the Lakers side, aside from Doncic's impressive triple-double—the 86th of his career making him seventh in league history for regular season triple-doubles—only Jake LaRavia and Jaxson Hayes managed to score in double digits, contributing 16 and 10 points, respectively. Wembanyama's presence, while questionable after a hyperextended knee, proved undeniably impactful as he followed up a 30-point performance with his 15th double-double this season, reported by Fox San Antonio.
San Antonio's significant run in the third quarter, an 11-4 stretch, built them a commanding 71-59 lead which they would never really to relinquish. Johnson and Stephon Castle teamed up in the key run, scoring nine of those points. Castle wrapped up the game contributing 15 points, while De’Aaron Fox added 14 to the Spurs' tally. Despite an energetic effort from the Lakers to cut the oop lanes to Castle and Luke Kornet early on, San Antonio proved adept in executing their strategies, even as the Lakers dazzled momentarily with a highlight-reel worthy reverse dunk from Hayes off a pass from Doncic.
The Lakers are set to host Milwaukee tomorrow, while the Spurs face off against Boston on Saturday.
