In a recent social media post from the Statesville Police Department, residents were reminded that January serves as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, highlighting the disturbing yet often unseen reality of human trafficking right in our own backyards. According to the Statesville Police, human trafficking manifests in forms of modern-day slavery, where individuals are coerced or deceived into labor or commercial sex. Alarmingly, these nefarious acts may be perpetuated by people victims trust, not just faceless strangers or through abductions.
North Carolina, unfortunately, ranks high among states for reported human trafficking cases. While these numbers reflect only those reported, underreporting is prevalent, indicating a possibly more widespread issue.
To combat this pervasive problem, the police department laid out several key recommendations. They urge the public to be wary of job opportunities and relationships that promise excessive rewards, to be prudent about personal information shared online, and to communicate with children and teens regarding online safety and maintaining healthy boundaries.
For those in imminent danger, calling 911 is advised. Furthermore, resources such as the National Human Trafficking Hotline, reachable at 1-888-373-7888 or by texting HELP to 233733 (BEFREE), provide immediate assistance for anyone suspecting or encountering human trafficking activities.
