A routine walk to school in Dolton turned into a scare Wednesday morning when a child heading to Lincoln Elementary School was approached in what police are calling an attempted abduction. The student was not taken and later spoke with detectives alongside a parent. District leaders quickly alerted families and said they are reviewing safety practices while the investigation continues.
Where It Happened
The encounter was reported near 142nd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, according to the district. The student and a parent described the suspect as a tall, dark-skinned, bald Black man. As of now, there have been no arrests, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
District Response
Interim Superintendent Dr. Mable Alfred told families that student safety is the district's "highest priority" and urged parents and caregivers to revisit walking routes and talk with children about personal safety. That message was shared with media by Dolton West School District 148, which oversees Lincoln Elementary along with other village schools.
Safety Steps Parents Can Take
District officials encouraged students to walk in groups, stay alert to their surroundings and seek help from trusted adults or nearby businesses if they ever feel unsafe. Those tips mirror long-standing recommendations from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which stresses using a buddy system, sticking to planned routes and identifying safe spots a child can head to if they sense trouble.
How To Report Tips
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact local law enforcement. Parents and community members can also share concerns with school administrators. Phone numbers, email contacts and campus addresses are listed on the Dolton West School District 148 website for families who want to follow up.
